Daily Tip
Great way to smooth your wood for a ultra smooth finish
Hi Jeff,
I recently discovered something that is going to save me loads of time.
I was talking to a guy at a craft who cuts ornaments using a laser. I cut ornaments with an Eclipse scroll saw, as you may remember from my previous emails. The laser guy asked if I wet my wood to raise the grain before sanding it. I told him "No." He said that even though he uses a laser for cutting, wetting the wood before sanding makes a major difference in how clean the cutting turns out.
The other day, I dampened the Baltic birch slightly to raise the grain. I used a heat gun to dry the plywood before I sanded it using 220 grit paper on a pad sander. After I finished cutting out the ornaments using reverse tooth blades I discovered that all the fuzzies were eliminated!
I have previously spent hundreds of hours with a tiny file cleaning up ornaments, so this technique is a major breakthrough. I haven't tried this with wood cut with spiral blades, but I feel sure it will help. Feel free to share this information in any way you like.
I absolutely appreciate the work you do and your willingness to share your talent, Jeff. Your patterns are outstanding! I hope you and your family will have a very Merry Christmas!
Sincerely,
David Sparks
