Daily TipHere's a tip for improving your grip and sanding delicate pieces sent in via E-mail from Jacob Mac Right off I want you to know I have no commercial interest in this product. My purpose here is to offer a tip by introducing a product that I have found to be of value in my scrolling and hopefully others may find useful as well. This is a product from 3m called Coban self adherent wrap, it is an elastic wrap that contains a cohesive material that makes it stick to itself but not to other materials or to skin. It is a natural rubber latex based product. A roll, 5 yards by 1" costs approximately 90¢ in my area so it is not expensive to purchase at your local Pharmacy. I'm sure many Scrollers have found that after a short time scrolling our hands become dusty, making it difficult to control the workpiece as well as we would like. Often fatigue sets in because of body tension as we try to maintain our control of the workpiece through the difficult cuts in a complex pattern. My solution is to cut short lengths (about two or three inches) of Coban to wrap just the tips of my thumb, forefinger and middle finger on each hand with a single wrap. Since this is a Latex material it gives my fingers more tack while holding, maneuvering the workpiece, greatly improving my control. One can scarcely feel the material itself while allowing good sensitivity. I have found I have less fatigue and body tension and am much more relaxed as I maneuver the workpiece through the challenging cuts. This wrap is also useful for those of us that have a need to sand small workpieces such as in our Intarsia projects. You know how difficult it can be to hold small workpieces against a sanding drum or wheel? Just a little too much pressure or a slip and your workpiece goes sailing across the shop. Maybe burning a finger or two in the process. With a few wraps of Coban around your fingers, sufficient that it gives you the best hand purchase can prevent this mishap. It works quite well.
