Daily Tip

Probably the question I am asked more then any other is what program should I use when I try to make my own patterns

There are a lot of programs out there that will help you to convert a photograph to a pattern, it would be difficult for me to try and tell you how each one works, and which is the best for you.

I can however tell you what program I use and what works out the best for me. My program of choice is Adobe Photoshop, I find that with the tools and flexibility it offers me I can develop patterns that have an incredible amount of detail with a minimum amount of work. Photoshop is an incredibly powerful program that with a little practice will help you to create patterns that will impress you.

I would recommend that if you decide to try to make patterns with Photoshop you stay away from the filters and "instant patterns" Everyone wants an easy way, or a program that will do all the work for you. There are some filters or programs that will get you close to what a pattern should look like, but the quality is much lower then what you will get if you do the work yourself.

You will be much better off using the dodge and burn tools in conjunction with the brightness and contrast controls than using any filter or auto generator. I spend 8 to 10 hours minimum on each pattern to get the quality that I do, on some patterns I have spent as much as 40 or 50 hours to get it just right, with practice and work you will be able to get similar results too.
