Daily TipThere is more to selecting and attaching a backer then just color I develop and cut all of my patterns to have some sort of backer behind them to help show off the cuts. There are many things to consider when selecting a backer. First is what color backer will you use, I have experimented with many different colored backers, and unless there is something unusual about the piece, I almost always choose black. Since really what you are cutting out on my patterns are the shadows, black is a natural choice. The contrast black offers with the wood really sets off the cutting, I haven't found anything that even comes close to the dramatic effect black offers. The second thing to consider is what material you will use. Painted wood, mat board, felt and even paper will all work, but what will be the absolute best? I have used each of these materials at least once and almost always choose felt. While wood and mat board do offer some added stability, I always frame my work, so that isn't a big concern for me. Paper is inexpensive and easy to work with, but I just don't care for the way it looks. I choose felt because I really like the texture of the felt next to the wood. The black coloring of felt is also usually deeper then any of the above choices, which results in a really sharp looking project. So now we have decided on what to use, how do we attach it? At the risk of sounding like a television show from the sixties... tune it tomorrow, same time and place and I will walk you through the process I use to attach the backer to my cuttings |
