Daily TipTo reduce burning in your cuts round your blade If you are among the few people that cut my patterns with a standard scroll saw blade, first let me commend you - my patterns are tough to cut with a spiral blade let alone a standard. The tight turns with a straight blade will sometimes cause scorching in your cuts. To help reduce that problem try rounding the back of your blade a bit. Install the blade in the saw as you normally would, then use a honing stone to round the corners. Lay the stone on the table of the saw, hold it at an angle (say about 45 degrees) and touch it lightly to the corner of the blade leave it there for a couple of seconds and then repeat the procedure on the other corner. After you have angled the corners off then rock the honing stone around the blade a few times to round the edges. This will greatly reduce the heat the blade makes as you make those very tight turns. If you still have problems you could use some tape on the cutting to help lubricate the blade. I personally prefer masking tape under the pattern because it is easier to see on the wood when I am trying to get it off, Some people like packing tape which probably does lubricate better, when it is under the pattern I have found it difficult to find all the little pieces when removing it, I don't like to put on top of the pattern as the light on the saw will often glare on the tape obscuring what is below it. Either one of the tapes will help, and when combined with rounding off the blade, it should all but completely eliminate blade burn. |
