Daily TipConsider prefinishing your wood before you cut Those of you that have cut my designs know that the resulting project will rarely stand up being heavily sanded after you cut the pattern. If your project isn't going to be framed then you will need to consider prefinishing. Projects framed under glass will never be touched so the finish isn't all that important (except for the visual part), however projects that will be handled will need special care. I always sand my wood before cutting, simply because I hate to sand by hand but I know my rotary sander will destroy the cuttings made from most of my patterns. It is possible to take that one step further, and prefinish your wood entirely, stain, oil and clear coat all before you ever apply the pattern. This will help you to get an extremely smooth finish without risking damage to your cutting. A few things to consider. The areas you cut out will not be finished, so any drastic difference in color (from adding stain etc) will be very noticeable. Also if you use Blue Painter's tape it will stick like crazy glue to wood that has Lacquer or poly on it (use the purple tape if you prefinish) When you are ready to remove the pattern from your prefinished wood it is still safe to use Paint Thinner, it isn't "hot" enough to damage either lacquer or poly. |
