Daily TipWhen pricing your work there is more to it then just the time you spend cutting For those of you that sell your work, pricing can always be a sticky issue, we are tempted to just charge for the hours we actually work on a piece, but there is much more that needs to go into it. When you cut something to sell, you not only use your time, but you put wear and tear on the saw, use blades, wood, felt, finish, sandpaper, wear and tear on your drill press, drill bit and if you frame them the price of the frame. Oh yeah I forgot to mention the electricity you used, not to mention the part of your house you have devoted to a shop.... If you have a mortage or pay rent then a fraction of that cost is your shop. If your shop is heated or cooled for comfort, you need to add the cost of that in, as well as any air filtration you use. There is also spray adhesive, computer paper, ink, any solvents you use, tape.... the list goes on and on. Then if you are selling at a show, you must figure a portion of your booth fee as well as travel expenses and meals... Try to figure all of this this into your pieces when you price them, or you are actually losing money. Figure a rate per hour you would work for (I use $45/hr, but that is me) add to that the cost of any materials you used, wood, blades, bits, sandpaper etc, etc. If you frame your pieces add the cost of not only the frame, but the time you spent framing it... Got a good number? Good, then add a percentage to that to cover all the other costs electricity, rent, the purchase of the pattern etc. I typically add 40% to my final number. Bet you are thinking that the prices are going to be really high, probaly more then you can reasonably sell your piece for.... in some cases you are right, however if you are at a good show and have taken the time to properly present you work it is possible to sell your work for the price you want. I have personally sold cuttings of patterns on this site for over a thousand dollars! If I can do it, you can too.
