Daily TipThink about it before you share a pattern Scrollers by nature are pretty generous folks, always happy to lend a hand to a fellow scroller. WHile this is normally a great thing, there is one instance where you may actually be harming the scrolling community in general. We have all seen the posts on the various message boards, I am looking for a certain pattern by so and so, I need a pattern of this, or that, I really would like to cut a project that was featured in this magazine in this month can anybody help me out, usually right under those posts is this "check your e-mail". What the person who is trying to help doesn't see is the effect his efforts have on the designers or even the magazine companies. Don't get me wrong, I am all for helping another scroller along, and not only do I offer tips and techniques, but I do offer patterns... however they are my patterns to offer. I am sure there is a misconception about what kind of money designers make, so let me clear it up, on an average pattern from any of the pattern companies the designer makes about $1.75-$2.25 of the purchase price. We have to sell a lot of patterns to be able to make ends meet. Each time we give away or share a pattern we are taking that money off someone else table. I know I can hear people saying it's only $2.00 how does that matter? Well it's two dollars each time it happens, while it doesn't sound like much consider how many times it happens a year and the numbers quickly add up. So what happens when a designer stops making money on their designs, or their books stop selling, or a magazines sales drop because everyone gives it to anyone that asks for it. They stop designing, writing books, or printing magazines. Then where would we be? There is also the whole copyright discussion you could throw on top of this. Bottom line, please think about it before you give someone a pattern, book or magazine you purchased (or got free from the designer) while you are helping out a fellow scroller, you just may be pushing that designer further away from designing new patterns for you to cut.
