Daily TipThere is more to selecting the proper blade, then what you are cutting in Blade manufacturers have put so much information out there on how to select the proper blade for your project, that it's pretty easy to find what they recommend for anything you want to cut in. What they fail to consider however is there are more factors that should influence your decision then just what you are cutting in. For example, most of my patterns are designed to be cut with a 2/0 blade, but I do most of my cutting in a stack that is at least 1/2" thick. Going strictly by the blade charts I will be using a blade that is way too small for the wood I am working in. When I look closely at the pattern I quickly realize that I couldn't fit a blade any larger into a lot of the veining lines, or small cuts without altering the pattern. While what you are working in is important, equally important is what you are working on. On my saw right now is a project that absolutely demands it's cut with a 2/0 (you will see it soon in Creative Woodworks and Craft Magazine), but I am cutting in 6 pieces of 5/32 oak ply. So my stack of oak is just a fuzz under an inch thick. My blades dull faster, and I have to feed the wood slower, but the 2/0 is more then up to the task. Keep this in mind the next time you get a pattern with lots of detail, and want to cut it in thick wood. |
